Off-Topic / Looking for a couple of books--need help!
« on: 16-03-2012, 18:03:27 »
Hey everyone! I'm desperately looking for a couple of what I assume to be modeling books, and no one I ask seems to have any idea. :( Naturally, this was the first forum I came to for some help.

Here are some of the different paintings that I've come across, and would kill to have the sources for:

Also, if you guys know of any other books with really killer vehicle reference paintings of WW2 vehicles of any kind, I'd love to get a hold of them.

Suggestions / High-res client texture pack.
« on: 19-02-2012, 04:02:46 »
This is probably one of the goofier suggestions on this forum, but I'd really like to suggest an optional High-res texture pack for those of us that could run it!

I'm going to glaze over the massive list of cons to this suggestion, in some round about way to show understanding of how pointless this suggestion is. In the end though, I hope to spark some discussion about  it.

When you get down to it, there is nothing wrong with the current texture sizes. However, in a mod dominated by vehicles with first person views, I can't help but long for a high-res vehicle texture pack to be released. I'm not sure what the median range of rigs that the FH2 community uses, but I can say with some certainty that an optional pack with doubled texture sizes would have little to no effect on the performance of newer systems.

However, there are several roadblocks: one is original texture availability and ease of access. Let's start at texture creation--are the textures found in the release version of the game even resized from higher-res versions? One would assume so, seeing as how FH2 adheres to general content creation standards. If not, well then this post has no meaning--making new high-res textures is a blatant waste of time.

Okay, now that we assume that the textures are originally downresed from the higher-res textures, we run into our next problem: can we still get most of the original textures? I can for see too major organizational issues that would arise at this point. The first issue is contact with the various artists: can you still get these original textures? Artists come and go as time goes on, so that's up in the air. The second issue is texture size in relation to file size--there is a lot of data to be moved around! Everyone knows textures are massive, so a pack with high res versions would probably end up being gigantic--I'd say around the same size as the mod itself. Again, both of these obstacles would require a good bit of time to overcome. At this point, I cannot present the perspective of the 'content assembler', so it's up to the devs to determine if such a pack is worth their time.

Now, the outcome is simple: everything looks nicer! I don't think community would mind being able to enjoy the artists' work as it was created--not to mention a simple quality increase for those who can enjoy it.

In the end, though, it really comes down to how many people are interested in a high-res texture pack, and if the devs see this as a justified endeavor.

Anyway, I'm really interested to what both sides think.

Suggestions / More trees.
« on: 15-09-2011, 00:09:42 »
Trees are a critical part of the gameplay in any Forgotten Hope map. However, I am afraid there are just not enough trees to accurately depict the tree on the battlefield. When ignorant people think about the Battle of the Bulge, they think about the Germans and the Americans. This is just not true. The numbers of trees produced in this period HEAVILY outweighs anything the Germans and Americans could bring to bear. The tree's participation in this battle between these two OVERRATED nations is nearly non existent in this mod. Here is a list of trees that I found today when I did extensive research on this website known as 'wikipedia' that I think should be implemented into the mod immediately.

the trees need

-Pinus sylvestris
-Picea specieses
-Larix decidua
-british armored cars
-Oh, and plenty of other trees from other european countries that don't really belong there, but I saw them on wikipedia so you might as well pour manhours into those, too.

Now, I know these trees don't have a place on any current map, so I fully expect you guys to make a map devoted to this selection of trees. If you don't, I'll be forced to mention them as much as possible in every post I make until I find something else to whine for.

In closing, make more trees. I'd try to make this last comment a poor attempt to speak tree language, but I don't think trees talk.

General Discussion / Heatmaps for FH2 Maps
« on: 07-03-2011, 03:03:13 »
I'm not sure if this would be the correct forum to ask such a question, but does anyone have heatmaps covering deaths and movement in the current Forgotten Hope 2 maps? I'm doing an analytical piece going over the mapflow and overall design of the maps. I am really lacking in information concerning how casual strategies developed since release, and how the maps are actually played contrasted with what the play style that was projected in development.

Anyway, if anyone has these, I'd really appreciate if I can 'borrow' them. :P (I hope this is the first thread concerning this, I couldn't find anything using search...)
