76MM armed shermans
« on: 06-08-2009, 13:08:00 »
Now i once read, that 76MM armed sherman tanks will not be seeing action in normandy 2.2 because someone said they saw action only late 1944.

But i just found this

Quote
The American Shermans were eventually up-gunned with the 76 mm gun M1. In the spring of 1944 Shermans with the new weapon entered production, with about 100 available in the UK prior to D-Day. The first 76 mm-armed tanks saw combat during Operation Cobra and became common by the winter.

I found this on the page of the 17pounder anti-tank gun wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/17_pounder

I dont know who said this before, but i think they should re-consider entering the 76MM sherman for normandy. If it is by a patch later on, its ok

If we make a map that requires it, yes. Otherwise we won't make it, as we don't need it if we don't have any map that needs it.  ;)

Weren't they used during Operation Cobra?

These tanks arrived in time to take part in Operation Cobra with the 2nd  “Hell On Wheels” and 3rd “Spearhead” Armored Divisions in the last week of July 1944. They were issued at a rate of one platoon per Tank Company. The offensive saw the Allied armies break out of their initial beachhead in Normandy and advance further into France.

Taken from Flamesofwar.com

Both the 2nd and 3rd armoured participated in Operation Cobra.

Indeed!Thats my point. They where used during Operation cobra.

So we really need 76MM shermans, even if it is on some sort of patch later on 2.2, they Where present during D-Day

but as previously stated guys they need a map that would require their involvement................so  if there is no map for it you cant really use it can you

(and by they way in the rules it says something about posting suggestions of different variants of vehicles and how the dev's already know bout them in case you were suggesting that it is needed)
:) WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.............its hell>>>>>>>>deal with it :)

I know this, but i heard rumors bout an operation Cobra map,or something

So thats why i am re-stating the fact that they where used.
If the rumors are false bout operation cobra being a 2.2 map, then dont mind this thread then :p

Wouldn't anything that was used in Operation Cobra also be historical for the Operation Luttich map that we know exists?

Other then the camo, yes.  And I'm not sure about the hedgerow cutter tanks, most of the 100 or so that were made were destroyed in the first days of Cobra (always being the lead tank does that to yah).

like someone said before (Toddel, I think) Don't ask for a weapon, Ask for a map that requires the weapon or whatever.

We're aware of it.
Also, 76mm is not the same as the 17 pounder. We already have 17 pounder shermans, unfortunately only the British and Canadians use them. The only American 76mm gun we have ingame is on the M10, which is much weaker than the 17 pounder, however still much stronger than the standard American 75mm.
Also, for those wondering, Operation Cobra has been observed on our test server. It will not be in 2.2 unless you see it in a news update prior to release.

As mudra says here about the cutter tanks, i have this question about the Marder I i remember one dev or some devs or whatever on the old forum. stating that is they are going to make a tank, it needs to have been produced allot,, not just 200. according to axis history forum, and wiki. this tank was used in the west in 1943, and in the east. and only One divison used it in 1944, and that was on the eastern front. i just dont get it :S

Actually....
The gun of the M10 Wolverine is diffrent then the one used in the 76MM sherman and M18 Hellcat

Not that much different though? And it did use the same shells I'm rather sure of. I remember hearing that 76MM sherman crews would trade to themselves the precious HVAP shells from m10 wolverine crews.

Also right now we have only one map where M4A1(76)W can be used.
in 2.15, we only had one map for the tiger tank.
I believe it aint much of an effort, to change the gun of the sherman?
Because always, if like, One german vehicle appears in only one map, it is instanly being added.
but if theirs an allied vehicle there to be added? >:(
