British Thompson Use
« on: 14-09-2009, 12:09:28 »
I know I'm digging up an old chestnut here and it really seems quite minor, but here goes.

As evidence has been found indicating some Canadian use of the Thompson M1A1 in Normandy, it's justifiable that they have it for their NCO kit. However, I've never been able to find any concrete evidence that British units were by and large issued with Thompsons rather than Stens anywhere in Normandy - Italy and other 'secondary fronts' yes, but on D-Day and later I've never seen a Brit with a Thompson. It always bugged me that British officers had Thompsons in FH1, and I'm again puzzled as to why they have them in FH2.

But please, if there is evidence that supports British (not Canadian) use of the Thompson, show me it. It'd put my mind at rest every time I look at the British spawn screen (which, IMO, is spoiled somewhat by the harshly different metal and wood colours on the M1A1 after the similarly coloured No4s, PIAT, Bren and Sten guns).

IIRC the Commandos and the SAS used the Thompson in France in quantity, but that was about it.

So really for the Brits the Thompson should only be availible on the invasion beach maps, or any maps featuring actions by the Commandos and maybe one or two pickup kits on other maps. Personally i think the Canadians should only have Thompsons as pickups as well.

Edit-  @ Ts4EVER - more likely Commandos imo, 47 RM landed at Gold Beach.

I would still rather see the Sten as the NCO kits sub machine gun.

I guess no maps exist yet that could use it. It was only used by Commandos and the SAS.

Personally, I think that the brit NCO should have a sten.  The canuc NCO should keep the thompson, but also get the HiPower instead of the AT.

i think the canadians had the Johnson Light Machine Gun aswell, which was on liberation of caen map on vanilla BF1942, only wierd thing is, it kinda looks similiar to the FG42 lol...

anyways i would love to see the beach maps that way FH2 will have a complete invasion of normandy maps :)

I think Töris said that the Sten in FH2 is actually a canadian model.  :P

You might want to read this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1941_Johnson_machine_gun
I know it's Wikipedia but it's a better history lesson then BF1942.

No offense intended mate, I just adore the Johnson and want to enlighten other people about it.

Are you confusing Johnson to Reising smg?

The markings say Long Branch, the Canadian factory. However the stock produced by this factory is different, so the markings aren't really accurate.

Good Job in photo-shop TS4EVER, and i agree the brits kit selection screen is a little weird.
