How many levels/maps should a game have
« on: 12-08-2009, 07:08:28 »
Okay ive noticed that the greedy game companies have but less and less levels into each game. lowest ive seen is 6... that's not  good and is boring after a week. Older games seemed to always have more, several games i own had a hundred plus levels/maps basic/included what do you guys think. how many levels should a game have.

this doesn't include mods only games, mods are special.

I guess that depends. A singleplayer game should IMO have like at least 15-20 hours of playtime, a multiplayer game (lets say in the style of FH/BF/COD) should have at least 7 maps, while it is obviously preferred to have as many maps as possible.
I see were you are trying to reach: "how can a 17 year old kid have such a thinking like this? why doesnt he wants to be like normal teens who whana get rich? and his plan actually makes sense, but is too damn revolutionary and good at the same time than is still doubthfull if it works..." - Damaso

Gamecompanys are becoming indeed more greedy and greedy.Less and less content is added.Things are very simple. The only game i bought this year, was Fallout3, and it was worth every euro

Mapping for modern games takes more time and effort than it used to.

There are still of course shitty game companies but they are exceptions.

Four, six or ten maps. Doesn't matter to me.
How large is one map/level, does it use repetitive objects, boring/ugly textures. How is the map setup, does it make sense?

It's quality before quantity for me? Rather enjoy 6 hours of solid and fine gameplay and entertainment, then 20 hours of boring shit.

Just look at FH2, hours of quality game play, because everything just fits perfectly together, not because they made 30 boring standard maps.

Singleplayer should have at least over 24 hours of game. Depends on the game.
Multiplayer over 10 maps to add variation. Anno 1404 is awesome since you have unlimited time, and it never gets boring. If a FPS game has got over 20 maps with a lot of variation will make the game playable longer than a game with just a few maps. It prevents those laggers who play a map 1000 hours and knows all the laggplaces. For example Men of war got over 20 maps if mods are added.

Depends. If it's primarily an MP game like Bf1942 7 is way too few. 12 for BF2 was way too few. I'd say at least 20 maps, minimum.

For SP play, 15 hours sounds like a good amount of time to beat the game. Of course this could vary depending on the skill level of the players, etc.

Singleplayer games tend to get shorter. The last 20+ hours FPS I played was HL2 and there was not one boring minute in it, so it is possible.

Some time ago publishers found out that most customers do not complete the games. I believe most customers are younger and tend to alter between games more often, only playing them as long as they are hip and fresh. In that age interests tend to shift more quickly, too. I can't deny that myself. When I was younger I was playing games usually until I found something new. I was playing less in general and barely finishing anything. However, publishers and developers reacted on this. Some years ago 50 hours playtime was standard for games. Nowadays it is 20. And thereby I got the impression that titles available in general are reduced in numbers these days and not that numerous than few years ago. On top of that, I grow older and focus on a smaller bandwith of games that I'm really interested in.
So, if you ask me, games couldn't last long enough, ever.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom

Singleplayer games do tend to be too short these days but there are also expections to this, like for example Bethesda's or Bioware's games. IMO singleplayer should last at least 25+ hours and for MP games there should be plenty of maps (like 10+) to offer variation so you wouldn't be bored after a few weeks.

BF43 was first released with three maps.  Three maps that were already done. Then they released another map. That had been already done.

I prefer a few maps with good replayability, quality and good squadmates than hundreds of shitty maps with tons of noobs  ;)

this is one of the games im talking bout, 4 maps and in my opinion none of the where good, and as you played more your veiches just destroyed everything and i mean everything on the map. Bf43 kinna counts but doesn't since it cost a mere 15$ oppose to 62.99$! I wouldn't be so mad about it if half the maps where actually an good.
